It's entirely that dynamic. What I was getting at there is that being a librarian is, itself, a signifier of the lack of awesomeness. And that I don't think they chose librarian for any other reason than that. OTOH, I suspect that Clark Kent is a journalist not to show that he is less awesome than Superman, but to justify his always being where the action is. But I could be wrong about that.
