the history faculty are coming over later and i have to try to convince them that worldcat local isn’t the end of the world. so i brought cupcakes because i can’t think of any other arguments.

and did it work?
i’ll let you know, we meet in an hour.
crossing my fingers. i don’t like to badmouth wcl because i respect a lot of the work that has gone into the project, but of all the things it is good for, finding stuff isn’t one of them.
went well and we all actually left feeling kind of…psyched…about WCL, sort of. i got too many cupcakes though and now i’m eating them. a lot.
So what’s the deal? Didn’t this whole thing happen last year? What’s new? I actually probably need to know this.
well, half of it happened last year with the change to Summit. This summer we (and many other Alliance libraries) purchased WorldCat Local. It made its debut as our “new catalog” (not factually correct but practically correct) when we started school a couple of weeks ago. it hasn’t been a totally…easy…transition for us for a variety of reasons: some of them related to problems on our end (both technical and, um, intellectual) and some related to problems with the product itself. I was telling Anne-Marie earlier that i felt i should actually write a post up about it so, you know, i guess i will. I mean, since you asked
got it. so not all summit libraries are doing this, just some. i would love to hear about the challenges.
I’ve showed up at PSU in time to be peripherally involved with the switchover here. It hasn’t happened yet, but is in the works. It will definitely be interesting to watch it play out.
Earlier this summer I interviewed one of the PSU catalogers for one of my Emporia classes and had a long conversation on the challenges of WCL. Now I’m working at PSU just in time to be peripherally involved with the switchover. It hasn’t happened yet, but is in the near future and will definitely be interesting to watch play out.
